sa number of huts, towards which an old woman and somechildren—like the rest, without one atom of dress—wereseen taking their way, each carrying a bundle of firewood.More children came out to meet them ; some men returnedfrom fishing ; and then the whole party set to work to cooktheir dinner, scarcely deigning to notice the ship, thoughsuch a sight as it they had assuredly never set eyes uponbefore. In the afternoon a party went ashore, having Tupia withthem; but though the natives had taken so little noticeof them in the morning, it was not so now. They wereat once met by two of them, who had no mind that thenew-comers should land there.
