e most favourable specimen ofa New Zealand family that had yet come under their notice.It consisted of a young woman, a widow, and her son—theten-year-old lord of the land whereon they had cut theirtimber—with a pretty numerous group of friends or ser-vants, all sitting in the open air at their dinner. Thesetreated their visitors with the utmost kindness and realpoliteness, giving them food, and earnestly pressing themto stay all night; which was, however, impossible, as theship was expected to sail in the morning. On the 6th of February, the wind was favourable, andthe Endeavour left the Sound, to finish her cruise roundthe islands. She completed this in time to bid farewell toNew Zealand at the cape to which Cook, in leaving, gavethe name of Cape Farewell, and, on the 31st of March,turned her bows towards the west, not again touching landuntil her anchor was let go on the shores of Australia, or,as it was then called, New Holland. NEW ZEALAND FLAX. NEW ZEALAND: ITS PEOPLE. 47 Zealanders before we leave them. They were a good-look-ing, healthy people: kind and affectionate to each other,but hating their enemies with all their heart. Their houseswere small, but well-built, affording good protection fromthe weather, about which, however, they did not seemmuch to care. The common dress was very strange-looking.It was composed of two pieces of coarse matting, made ofthe split leaves of a species of flag, which serves them forall the uses that hemp and flax serve ust and is now knownas New Zealand flax. There were two kinds of this plant:one with yellow flowers, the other having them of a deepred. The ends of these slips were left sticking out on theouter side, so that it looked like a shaggy door-mat: thisshag turning the rain, of which at times they had a gooddeal.
