Text Appearing Before Image:
, shakinga rattle in each hand, made friendly demonstrationstowards the new-comers: speechifying and throwingfeathers, whilst some of his companions flung red dustabout. The speaker was dressed in the skin of someanimal: two or three of the party had their heads strewedwith small white feathers, as though a pillow-case had beenshaken over them : others had large ones stuck here andthere in their long, lank black hair. Altogether, they werean odd-looking set. One of these strange beings sang asoft, melodious air, which did not seem much in keepingwith his rude exterior. Other canoes followed these, one of them having a singular figure-head, with animmense birds eye and beak painted upon it. Its oc-cupant, who vigorously shook a rattle which he held in hishand, was singular-looking also, being painted in a strangefashion, and having his head feathered to an extravagantdegree. NATIVES. 19F Not prepossessing, certainly, but they turned out a toler-ably decent set, for savages ; being civil and good-temperedin the main—though suddenly blazing up if they fanciedthemselves wronged—and indifferent honest. Yet suchthieves as they had were much more dangerous ones thanthose our people had left behind ; for they were possessedof good, sharp iron knives, with which they would whip ahook, aye, even of twenty to thirty pounds weight, off itstackle in an amazingly short time, and away with it. Intrading, brass was greatly sought by them ; and, seeingthat our friends were getting rather low in the world asto articles for barter, before long they had almost strippedthemselves of every bit of it, even to the buttons on theircoats. What they got in return were furs of severalanimals : sea-otters, bears, wolves, deer, and others ; dressesmade of them ; and a kind of cloth manufactured from thebark of trees, native weapons, and other little thingsfancied a
