hoisting sail a four-pounder was dischargedat the savages, which luckily frightened them quite as muchas was desired. At Tanna, south-east of the island from which they hadthought best to make so rapid a retreat, Captain Cookmade up his mind to stay for some little time, as he wasmuch in need of wood and water. But here, too, he wasobliged in the first place to frighten the natives into goodbehaviour, which being done, they settled down into verytolerable friendliness. A walk into the country gave ourvoyagers a notion of the natives houses, some of whichwere open at both ends : all were thatched with palm. Infront of most of the larger houses a framework of uprightstems of cocoa-nut trees was set up for the purpose ofdrying the nuts; and the houses were usually placedunder the shade of a large tree or two.
