to get on well enoughamong themselves, though the chiefs were always readyto rule each other, with a rod of iron, whenever they gotthe opportunity. Among the amusements popular in the island was onenot unknown among ourselves. It was played betweentwo, one of whom placed a small stone under a cloth, whichhe afterwards so rumpled and crumpled that it was impos-sible to tell where the stone lay; the other then, makingthe best guess that he could as to its whereabouts, struckwith a stick the spot where he imagined it to be. Their weapons of war were spears, clubs, daggers, andslings. The spear, of hard solid wood, was either six toeight feet long, with a four or six-barbed point, or twelve orfifteen feet in length, simply pointed. The dagger, orpaJwoa, was of a ponderous black wood, one to two feetlong, and secured to the arm by a loop. The clubs were ofall sorts and sizes ; the slings were of the invariable form ofthat weapon. The general impression made by the people and countrywas exceedingly gcod ; and so delighted was CaptainCook with the discovery of this large and beautiful island, varied by mountain, and plain
