Text Appearing Before Image:
he small shot, though it did not strike, stopped the assailants for a short space, when a third lightbarbed lance answered the discharge. Ball was next fired, upon which they turned, and ran swiftly away. Cook andhis friends, finding the people so hostile, thought it best toreturn to their boat, and on their way to it saw a largebody of between sixty and a hundred natives, movingtowards them. The boat was, however, reached in safety, and then they were able to take a good look at the angry, shouting, naked beings before them, who kept letting offtheir fireworks, which appeared to be discharged from ashort stick, swung sideways from them. These people werelighter coloured than the New Hollanders; but whethertheir skins really were so, or they were only less dirty, couldnot be made out. How much goes to the making of a good commander!Courage, fortitude, patience, justice, mercy, moderation, perseverance, self-denial: Cook seemed to possess them all. The country hereabout appeared to be very rich andproductive. Of the natives we give a specimen in ourillustration. How they managed to dress their hair inthat preposterous fashion, we are not told; but it wasevidently a work of labour and of skill. The bad condition of his ship at this time induced thecommander to make sail for Batavia, where, as the Dutchhad long had a settlement there, he would be
