The islanders themselves willingly assisted in the workof construction, acting as beasts of burden with much cheer-fulness. The commencement of this important undertakingwas signalised by serving out pork for dinner; and thekindly natives brought them more bread-fruit and cocoa-nuts than they could possibly eat. Beads were the pur-chase-money, in which transaction one thinks the vendorsmust have come off second best, seeing they only gotone bead, the size of a pea, for half-a-dozen cocoa-nuts orbread-fruits.
