221 The Dome Builders Maristan, with its Gothic gateway brought from *Akkaby his brother Khahl, and the old mosque (1318) inthe Citadel, are worthy memorials of his taste, thoughunhappily they show but few traces of their originalsplendour. The great dome which once surmountedthe Citadel mosque has fallen in, and most of themarble mosaics which adorned the kibla have vanished,as well as the iron grille which enclosed the sultansplace of prayer (maksura). There is still a range ofclerestory windows all round the mosque, but thetracery and stained glass is almost all gone ; yet theten great granite columns, and the marble mosaics onthe south wall, and other relics, show what the mosquemust once have been. Its most remarkable feature isthe coating of the minarets with green tiles, which mayprobably be ascribed to the Tatar influence of Nasirswife, who belonged to the royal family of the GoldenHorde. That the Citadel mosque is not whollydestroyed is due to the care of Colonel C. M.Watson,
