l not be surprised to hear that, in that age ofwars and treacheries and murders, ruffians were found totry to assassinate this good king. He had scarcely gotsettled at Paris when a lad of nineteen, named John Chas-tel, attended one of his receptions and stabbed him in theface with a knife, without seriously injuring him.
