In other words, the axis of stresses in the valve-stemand in the eccentric-rods coincides with the axes of those rods.The figure also illustrates another form of link called the side-barlink. The position of the link-block is adjustable to vary the cut-off by means of the screw M actuating the bridle NP. This isoften desirable in regulating the distribution of power between thecylinders of compound and triple-expansion engines. By rotatingthe reverse-shaft, S, however, the link may be thrown over orreversed independently of the position of the screw M. To shift the link there are required (Fig. 185) a reverse-shaft,S; a bell-crank, RSn; and a suspension-rod, nm0 (also called ahanger or bridle), attached to the saddle-pin, m0.
