e and conditions, as to water-supply, etc., from the steam tothe water, the largest number of heat-units. This will, moreover,be the condenser which will not only register the highest vacuum, but will maintain it at the least cost in condensing water, andwith the smallest surface and cubical capacity per pound of steamcondensed. It will also, in given conditions, be the one to yieldthe highest hot-well temperature. Now, in order that a surfacemay act thus, it is necessary that the steam should have free accessto, and should pass over, sufficient surface on the one side, andthat all the condensing water should come into direct and efficientcontact with the surface on the other side. This clearly cannotbe the case if, on the steam side, practically the whole surface iscontinually subjected to showers from the water of condensation,or if the steam can short-circuit any material amount of the sur-face; nor can it be the case on the water side if the condensing COXDENSERS AND AIR-PUMPS. 261
