ch would combine the pluck of the Bulldogwith the punishing power and the activity ofthe terrier family. The Bulldog of a hundred 36 Bull Terrier—Buntings years ago was rapidly becoming useless as afighting dog, being slower in Ms movementsand more cumbersome than he was formerly,whilst the tenacity with which he holds onwhen his teeth have once met in his adversarywas found to be a disadvantage in the pit.Hence the production of the Bull Terrier. Originally, no doubt he was a very differentsort of animal to the level-headed, tight-lipped,white-coated specimens of the breed which areto be seen at dog shows. Indeed he is still tobe found in fairly large numbers in the BlackCountry, of a very similar appearance to th&animals portrayed in old pictures of represen-tative dogs of many years ago. These favouredthe Bulldog far more in appearance than theterrier, and in fact corresponded very closelyto the Bull and terrier of the modern Potteriesand Black Country. The latter animals are

Bull Terrier rarely of the white colour, which is the only onethat is recognized by the judges at dog shows,but for the most part resemble their ancestorsthe Bulldogs of the past, and thereby appear asbrindles, reds, fawns, and pied specimens ofsuch. They are also much thicker in the headthan the show dog is, whilst many of them areunderhung, a fault which would lead to thedisqualification of the latter. Beyond all doubt the Bull Terrier suffersfrom an infirmity of temper which has earnedfor him a worse name than he would otherwisehave possessed; but if kept properly under con-trol from puppyhood, and provided that he isnot encouraged to fight, the breed is not sounreasonably savage as it is believed to be bypeople who have no experience of it. Theyunquestionably possess intelligence beyond theordinary, and are most companionable andactive dogs, but it must be confessed that atbest their tempers are apt to be uncertain, andhence they cannot be recommended as a general-purpose dog.
