Cat 133 sharp-pointed retractile claws, which they usewith great ferocity and effect. A very charac-teristic feature of the Felidse is the spotted orstriped markings upon the fur, and everyonemust know that cats with such markings uponthem are more abundant than whole-colouredspecimens, even though the last named are socommon in a state of domestication. The useof the markings is to render the animal lessconspicuous whilst hunting its prey. As juststated, the Felidse have retractile claws, the lastinter-phalangeal joint having an elastic liga-ment, which is fixed to the outer side of thelower end of the second phalanx, and by theother (lower) end to the last phalanx, imme-diately above the root of the claw. Contractionof the ligament draws the claw inwards. Theact of projecting the claw is obviously a volun-tary one, and employed not only as a means ofoffence and defence, but also for climbing pur-poses.
