e Vetches. Chick Pea (Cicer arieti-num) is an annual of theleguminous order, coveredwith glandular hairs whichsecrete an acid fluid. It growsabout a foot high, branchesmuch, and has pinnatedleaves, whose oblong leaflets,in about seven pairs and ahalf, are finely and regularlyserrated from near the middleto the end. The flowers growsingly on slender stalks, andare white, tinged with pink.These are succeeded by ob-long, turgid, hairy pods, ter-minated by a long style, andusually containing two pale-yellow seeds, having muchthe appearance of a ramshead. This little annual is anHive of the south of Europeand many parts of the East.In India it is commonly cul-tivated, and it is one of the many plants-knownunder the name of gram. Our summers arehardly long and warm enough to ripen itsseeds. In the south of Europe the plant is largelygrown for the sake of its seeds, which are muchemployed in French cookery under the name ofPais chiche, or Oarvance, whence the common Chickweed — Chicory 205
