Savoy Cabbage Kale may be named. The latter is unques-tionably a variety of cabbage, but deservesseparate notice as it is recognized as a distinctcrop. The chief insect enemies of this crop are theroot fly (Phorbia brassiaie), the cabbage moth(Mamestra hramax), the cabbage aphis (Aphisbraisicce, see under art. Aphides), and the whitebutterfly (Pieris brassicce). The reader will find 60 Cabbage — Cacao descriptions of these insects in the arts, onPhorbia, Mamestra, &c. (j. Wr.) Cabbaee (Garden).—While the cabbagewill grow in almost any kind of soil, it can onlybe produced in perfection in soil that is of goodquality and well manured. In the market gar-dens near London, where enormous quantitiesof manure are used, the best-quality cabbagesare grown. In addition to farmyard manure,guano, superphosphates, nitrates, and wood ashesare sometimes applied with advantage. The freeuse of lime is necessary to keep down the diseaseknown as finger-and-toe or anbury (see Finger-and-Toe). See
