| Description | It was fascinating to walk through the sprawling Rock Garden built due to one man's passion for junk and creating art out of it. Sadly however, although the city authorities finally reconciled themselves to the fact that it was an illegal construction and started supporting the project, the support from the city authorities gradually ebbed away. over the years Certain officials resented Nek Chand’s international fame. Keeping with India's idiotic and absurd caste system, their thinking was that Nek Chand was after all only a humble man from a lowly background and so he could not possibly be as important as they were. From 1988, funding for Nek Chand's pet project were stopped with even the admission money being withheld. In 1990, a road for the exclusive use of VIPs was to be built right through the middle of the Garden. Trees were cleared ready for construction and bulldozers arrived at the very walls of the Rock Garden, only to find their way barred by hundreds of children and demonstrators. A lengthy court battle ensued, eventually resulting in victory for an exhausted but relieved Nek Chand. Security was restored for the garden but with little or no funding.
