arge quantities are caught by thenatives in nets. They are to be caught duringthose months at two or three places in theSpots in harbour, and notably up at the head near HogHa°rboun Island, and lower down the harbour where theSunk Rock Lighthouse has been built to markthe site of a dangerous rocky shoal. In fact,this last is probably the best place known forthem, and by asking permission (which is alwaysreadily granted) from the port-office the base ofthe lighthouse itself may be used, and will befound a very good spot to fish from.Seasons They are most numerous, run larger, and areand Tides, j^ ^^^ ^^^^ condition during the monsoon months,from say the end of May till the end ofSeptember; and, curiously enough, they canbe caught here only on the ebb-tide. Spring-tides are the best, and it should be borne inmind that the worse the weather the better theday for fishing. Bahmin Caught in Bombay Harbour. Weight 105 lbs. FISHING 291 bomalo (Bombay duck, Harpodon nehereus\a semi-transparent, gelatinous fish, which some-what resembles a young whiting. These latterare easily got, and can be purchased at any timein the local fish markets. They are not quiteas good a bait as the prawn, but better than an Baits,artificial lure. At other times a large phantomminnow will be found useful, and when the wateris more than usually clear (as it often is duringneap tides) a spoon bait from \\ Inches to 3inches should be tried. The fish themselves ordinarily run from 4 lbs.to 15 lbs. in weight. A good average would befrom 7 to 9 lbs. Much larger fish are caught inthe nets further out at sea, but not often by linein the estuaries, even by the natives. They arevery active and powerful, and run and fight wellwhen hooked. Other very good places for thesefish on the Malabar coast are the backwaters at On theCannanore, Calicut, Mahe and Tellicherry, and ^f^g^^^^^the estuary
