In the event ofa tie, the better average of placings is preferred,but the horse that has run five times sixthexcludes another that may have run four timesfirst. This mode of reckoning prevents desperatefinishes for places, and has been found satisfactoryin practice. The Paper-chase Cup, value Rs.500, to whichis added a handsome Challenge Bowl presentedby the officers of the Rifle Brigade, is the Clubspremier trophy. For this, and for a Heavy-weight Cup, a separate chase is run in Marchunder special conditions. As in the Average Cup competition, membersof the Club riding their own horse are aloneeligible, and such horses must not have wona race of any description value Rs.550 or over,and must, further, have been regularly paper-chased throughout the season to the satisfactionof the committee. A minimum weight of 11 st.is imposed, and to compete for the Heavy-weightCup, members must walk at least 11 st. 7 lbs. andride 12 st. 7 lbs.

PAPER-CHASING 467 An annual Ladies Cup provides an excitingspectacle in a ladies steeple-chase, and a largefield of fair candidates always muster at thestart. Cups for the pony class are run on similarlines, but only one was offered last season. To compete in the first flight of a Calcuttapaper-chase, the eleven-stone man must expect topay at least a thousand rupees for his mount. In addition to the above prizes, the CalcuttaTurf Club offers annually a number of races forthe hunter class, which provides a great incentiveto owners of paper-chasers to pay high prices fortheir animals. All these chases are run in the early morning,and thus necessitate early rising and well-strungnerves. As a test of endurance, bold horseman-ship and presence of mind, a paper-chase cup racemay be favourably compared with any steeple-chase in the world, and in no school can thesequalities be more readily acquired.
