English: The site of Thorpe-on-the-Hill station The Nottingham to Lincoln line was built by the Midland Railway and engineered by Robert Stephenson. The line was opened on 4th August 1846. Thorpe-on-the-Hill station existed just ahead, beyond the crossing, opening in 1846 and closing in 1955 for lack of use. On the right is the former station house - see 3706258. The nearest station is now Hykeham, two miles to the east ahead while Swinderby is some three miles to the west in the other direction. See also 5928883 for a view of the crossing from the road. |
