Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe sinking of the Marquette, October 23, 1915 (22182365316).jpg |
On October 23 1915, the cargo ship Marquette was torpedoed and sunk in the Aegean Sea. Of the 731 people on board, 10 New Zealand nurses were lost, along with 19 male Medical Corps staff (part of the New Zealand No. 1 Stationary Hospital) and three New Zealand soldiers. Cargo ships were a target of German torpedoes whereas hospital ships were safe from attack. New Zealand Governor Lord Liverpool requested that any future transport of military nurses was to take place on hospital ships. The image shown here is a telegram sent to the War Office in London notifying them that the Marquette has been torpedoed. Archives New Zealand holds the military service files for those who were killed when the Marquette was sunk. A list of those who died can be found at this link from NZ History Online www.nzhistory.net.nz/media/photo/hospital-ship-marquette WW1 personnel files can be located by searching at the following Archives New Zealand site archives.govt.nz/world-war-one Reference: R22433441 AAYS 8638 AD1 49/88/1 For more information email Research.Archives@dia.govt.nz For updates on our On This Day series and news from Archives New Zealand, follow us on Twitter www.twitter.com/ArchivesNZ Material supplied by Archives New Zealand |
