ajority of ewes have only been a short time im-pregnated. We find that ergot has much more powerto cause abortion when the fcetus is getting more fullygrown. The action of ergot is to cause unnatural andcontinuous pains in the walls of the uterus, contractingthat part, and inducing the animal to cast ofl its young,as in case of natural parturition. But in long frosts, when the groundis not covered with snow—so frequently occurringwhen the ewes are in an advanced stage of pregnancy—they are obliged to subsist on dry food.
