The Yell-Maker uttered a grunt of pleasure and in a flashstretched out one of its long legs toward the queens nose,where its powerful claws came together with a loud snap.Aquareine did not stir; she only smiled. Both Zog and thecreature that had attacked her seemed much surprised to findshe was unhurt. Again! cried Zog; and again the Yell-Makers clawshot out and tried to pinch the queens pretty ear. But themagic of the fairy mermaid was proof against this sea-rascalsstrength and swiftness, nor could he touch any part ofAquareine, although he tried again and again, roaring withanger like a mad bull. 174

The Sea Fairies Trot began to enjoy this performance, and as her merry,childish laughter rang out the Yell-Maker turned furiouslyupon the little girl, two of the dreadful claws trying to nipher at the same time. She had no chance to cry out, or jumpbackward; yet she remained unharmed. For the Fairy Circleof Queen Aquareine kept her safe. Now Capn Bill was attacked, and Princess Clia as well.The half-dozen slender legs darted in every direction, likesword thrusts, to reach their victims, and the cruel clawssnapped so rapidly that the sound was like the rattling ofcastanets. But the four prisoners regarded their enemy withsmiling composure, and no yell greeted the Yell-Makersefforts. Enough! said Zog, softly and sweetly. You may re-tire, my poor Yell-Maker, for with these people you arepowerless. The creature paused, and rolled its yellow eyes. May I nip just one of the slaves, oh, Zog*? it asked,pleadingly.
