All the organisms and functions of the woman are more or lessin sympathy with these,and from the full, healthyand harmonious develop-ment of the sexual systemcome the ruddy cheek, theelastic step, the buoyant,womanly spirit, and thatconstancy and affectionwhich so pre-eminentlycharacterize, beautify andennoble the female sex.Formerly the uterus wasthought to be the most im-portant of the reproduc-tive organs, but it is nowknown to be but the laterreceptacle for the egg, orovum, which is first pro-duced in the ovaries andconveyed by the Fallopiantubes into the uterus,where, if conception takesplace, it remains and de-velops into a new being;otherwise, after a short stay, it passes off. The uterus is be-tween the bladder and the rectum, above and continuous withthe vagina, and is supported partly by eight strong ligaments,and partly by the tension of the vaginal muscles beneath it,which serve as pillars. Besides the principal arteries the cut shows the kid-neys, the aorta, the ovaries and the Fallopian tubes. 278 THE REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS. pear, with the broad part upward.
