ace of the apo-neurosis. The superficial perineal muscles are of slight obstetrical importance. They are the constrictor vaginae, the ischio-cavernosi, and the trans-versi perinaei. The constrictor vaginae consists of two small lateral muscles, situ-ated upon the outer sides of the vestibular bulbs, and surrounding thevulvar orifice. Posteriorly the extremities of the main muscle startfrom the perineal fascia at a point nearly midway between the sphinc-ter ani and the ischia, while a small bundle only is connected with thesphincter ani itself.* Above, the convergent ends separate into asuperficial and deep portion. The superficial portions terminate in atendon which unites them together above the dorsal vein of the clito-* Luschka, Anatomie des raensehlichen Beckcns, p. 399. The action of the muscle consists chiefly in compressing the veins

It is in no sense a sphincter muscle, though, bypressing the turgid bulbs inward, it may narrow the vestibule of thevagina. The ischio-cavernosi muscles form a sort of flbro-muscular sheathabout the crura of the clitoris. They are united together above by anaponeurosis which crosses the posterior extremity of the body of theclitoris. During sexual excitement these muscles are capable not onlyof compressing the crura, thereby forcing the blood toward the bodyof the clitoris, but, through the pressure exerted by the aponeurosisupon the dorsal vein, they help to retard the return of the blood fromthe turgescent organ. The transversi perinaei muscles are small, triangular, flattenedmuscles which pass from the inner sides of the ischia, underneath theconstrictor muscle, to the sides of the vagina and
