The labia majora act as a sortof valve, which closes the orifice ofthe vagina, whence the term vulva—i. e., valva, the folding-door ofthe ancients. When the labia arefull and well rounded, they areapproximated closely together, andform the vulva connivens. Withthe loss of adipose tissue, a gapingof the flaccid labia ensues, andforms the vulva Mans. The labia offer an external andinternal surface. The outer sur-face presents the usual character-istics of tegumentary tissue, andis abundantly supplied with large sebaceous glands. The inner surfaceis in all respects like a mucous membrane, except that it possessessebaceous glands in place of mucous follicles. The subcutaneous tis-sue is composed of connective tissue, rich in elastic elements, and con-taining fatty lobules continuous with the underlying adipose struct-ure.
