as areason for drinking, isthe * most marvelouspiece of sophistry everentertained by hu-manity. It is equiv-alent to saying that itis not the exposure tosmallpox which kills,but the taking of thedisease; not thedrinking of the ty-phoid bacillus in con-taminated water, butthe growth of the bacillus in the intestinal canal;not the breathing of the tuberculous dust, butthe growth of the bacillus after it is inhaled;not the aiming of the weapon and the pulling ofthe trigger, but the crash of the bullet throughthe brain, that kills. Of all those who begin to drink in modera-tion, and that is almost every one who begins todrink at all, a greater or less percentage willdrink to excess, become drunkards, die of acuteor chronic alcohol poisoning, or beget degener-ate children. It is just as inexorable that ofthose who drink some will die by alcohol as it isthat of all unprotected persons exposed to small-pox some will contract and die with the disease.
