This town is named after CharlesWashington, a brother of the General,and lies upon land once owned by him.A short distance from the station is Brad-docks Well, dug by his troops whenon their way to Fort Du Quesne. Amile west is the ruin of a stone church,built to shelter those who prayed fortheir reigning sovereign, George II.Near by is Harewood House, thehome of Samuel Washington, whereJames Madison was married, where LouisPhillipe and his brothers, the Due deMontpensier and Count Beaujelaix, wereentertained. In the Court House, at Charlestown,John Brown was tried and condemned,and, in view from the cars, is the spotwhere he was hung. Between Berryville and White Post issituated historic Greenway Court, themanor house of Lord Fairfax, Wash-ingtons patron, and the owner of50,000 acres of surrounding territory.
