At twenty-three he tookthe Franciscan habit, and preached through-out Italy with marvellous success. He re-fused several bishoprics, preferring thesimple life of a friar. He founded the Re-formed Order of Franciscans, called Osser-vanti, because they observed the originalRule of St. Francis. It is said that, while preaching, he used to hold in his handa tablet, on which was carved the sacredmonogram, I.H.S., encircled by rays.
