This they refused to do,and the Emperor twice ordered the legionto be decimated by lot, but the remaindercontinued steadfast; so a general massacrewas ordered, and they perished to a man.Legend also relates that St. Gereon, withanother section, met with a similar fate atCologne. MICHAEL AND THE DRAGONFrom the painting by Piero delta Francesca m the Nat Till-; SAINTS IN ART 147 Maximin, St. Tradition says he was one of the seventy-two disciples sent forth to preach, andthat he went with SS. Martha, Mary, andLazarus, to Marseilles. (See St. MaryMagdalene.) According to a legend he gavethe Sacrament to St. Mary just before herdeath. He often appears in pictures of St. Lazarusand his sisters, sometimes as a bishop. Michael, St. (the Archangel). (Ital. San MlCHELE or SAMMICHELE.)
