He was accompanied by Ealdwine, Prior ofWinchcumbe, and Oswin, a monk, and the three,with their scanty possessions carried on an ass, setmanfully forth to restore monasticism in Northumbria.Their first halt was at Monkchester, their second atJarrow. Here Oswin was left while Ealdwine andRegenfrith continued their journey. At last they,too, separated, and Regenfrith came alone to Streone-shalch, which is also named Hwiteby. This led to the secession ofStephen and his friends to York, where he becameabbot, and wrote the record to which we have more than oncereferred. Mean-while the devo-tion of Williamde Perci. couldnot rest till he-had raised hisPrior\- into arich and powerfulAbbey; and then,for some reason,Scrlo was dis-placed, and ayounger William,nephew of thefounder, wasmade abbot.
