rium, or common-room, have been west of the refectory—the obvioussituation for the buttery, and there seems no reasonwhy the large room at the south-east corner of thecloister-court—sometimes called theAbbots hall —should not have been, as its situation at oncesuggests, the calefactorium.* What has happenedto the frater is in reality this. Originally it wasperfectly normal, having its base abutting on, and itslength at right angles to, the south cloister. Then itbecame necessary or desirable to enlarge it ; and thiswas done by throwing down the wall between fraterand kitchen, and so producing an L-shaped room. Thenew kitchen to the south of the open yard, or garth,was the natural accompaniment of this alteration. Between the cellarium and the west walk of thecloister was a wide passage communicating directly * East of the kitchen, too, is not the buttery but, surely, thenecessarium of the monks ; that of the conversi being plainlythe large western building miscalled the granary.
