Text Appearing Before Image:
ease in the number of cases of Fomes. This is one of thecontinual instances which keep occurring to testify to thenecessity of getting the soil into a good state. WTien soil isbadly drained and uncultivated, and, therefore, unaerated, it isthe happy hunting-ground of the maleficent forms of bacteriaand of fungi. Every manager, especially on newly-planted jungle-lands,should employ a number of his most intelligent coolies asassistant inspectors to report on all cases of suspected disease.Their whole time and attention should be given to this work, and nothing should be permitted to interfere with it. The signsof disease are usually a listless look about the foliage and hang-ing down of the leaves, and, when the roots of the tree are at allseriously affected, it will be found to be loose in the soil. Ifbadly attacked it can readily be pushed over, or will fall of itsown accord. In the latter event the roots should at once bedug out, the soil treated with lime and exposed to the sunlight.
Text Appearing After Image:
DISEASES 265 When a suspected case is reported, the roots should be wellexposed, and, if the tree is found to be affected, the roots shouldbe thoroughly well washed over with lime and a trench dug allround to isolate the tree. Wherever a case of Fomes occursthe trees in the immediate neighbourhood should also be treated
