ttempt to form a nest. Certain other species of the genus, such as S. lepto-fjramimicum of Borneo and several Soutli American forms, while agreeing with allthe preceding in having the plumage of the crown of the head either mottled orbarred, differ in their more or less completely naked toes. In the second maingroup of the genus, comprising five species, of which the Indian brown wood-owl(aS. indiani) will serve as an example, the crown of the head is, on the contrary, always of a uniform brown ; the toes being either feathered or bare. The Indian 15° O WLS. brown wood-owl, which is uniform chocolate-brown above, becoming darker onthe head, attains a length of 28 inches; it is replaced in the Himalaya by therather smaller Nipal brown wood-owl (*S. newarense). Although several groups of owls are furni«hed with the tufts offeathers, commonly denominated ears, it will be convenient to restrictthe title of eared owls to the members of the genus Asio, which includes the common Eared Owls.
