Smut had two severe gashes in the throat, Lenawas cut under the ear, and Brans mouth was openedcompletely up to his ear in a horrible wound. Thedogs were completely exhausted, and lay pantingaround their victim. We cut off the boars head, and,slinging it upon a pole, we each shouldered an endand carried it to the kennel. The power of this animalmust have been immense. My brothers weight andmine, together being upward of twenty-four stone, inaddition to that of half-a-dozen heavy dogs, did notappear to trouble him, and had we not been close tothe spot when he came to bay, so that the knives cameto the instant succour of the dogs, he would have mostprobably killed or wounded half the pack. It is wonderful to see therapid recovery of dogs from wounds which at firstsight appear incurable. An instance occurred a shorttime ago, when I certainly gave up one of the bestdogs for lost. We had found a buck, who after asharp run, came to bay in a deep part of the riverknown by the name of Black Pool. My youngestbrother1 (who is always my companion in hunting) andI were at some distance, but feeling certain of thelocality of the bay, we started off at full speed towardsthe supposed spot.
