If, on the other hand, reflection on the cornerstones of international portraiture stands out as one of the greatest acquisitions of this first Parisian sojourn, it will be ,as we shall see, on the occasion of the 1878 trip that Gioli's tangencies with the most current tendencies of the Parisian Salons will be further clarified, one need only think of the story of Passes the viaticum and Degas's well-known redaction in the presence of the latter. Meanwhile, the artist deepens, in the wake of verist episodes such as Un incontro, Il Guado, the strand of agresti themes in Ritorno delle mamme (1877), presented at the Esposizione dell'Incoraggiamento delle Belle Arti in Florence and awarded "with notable mention," together with Una fiera sull'Appennino by Stefano Bruzzi.

In fact, a breath of greater naturalness comes to animate this work, as Bernardo Marrai notes in the pages of Rivista Europea: " In the Return of the Mothers, by Gioli, which makes us remember that verse of Martial Matremque plenam mollis agnus expectat, the character is also struck just right, and the effect of light in the background of the painting rendered very well. From the warm hue of the sky the faring of the evening is evident; and that sampling on the air of the flock and the shepherds leading it to the stable, is beautiful. This, too, is a scene seen and studied from life. In the little lambs coming out of the unfolded fold, bleating and prancing in search of their mothers, is a great naturalness. Those are precisely their spontaneous acts; and so they do in submitting, having reached and recognized that they have them, to their sterns, wiggling their tails."
