34 Combustion Retarding Apparatus. CALIBRATION OF APPARATUS. Volume The volume of the apparatus was determined by water displacement. Thejoints were painted and made tight, and theblind flanges bolted on the ends. Water waspoured into the observation port with a standardU.S.Gallon measure and a graduated flask. Theapparatus was found to contain 34,430 o.c. Oas-air . . Mixture Assuming that gas and air are chemically inert, the following method was used for determining the percentage mixture: Let V-i- Volume of system in c.c. below^ atmospheric pressure. Pi- Pressure of V below atmospheric. V - The volume of air plus gas in c.c.2 subjected to pressure Pg. P^_ Atmospheric pressure. Y-r Vo-Vt or volume of gas in c.c. tobe added to the system. 35 Combustion Retarding Apparatus. The tentperature ramaining constant.Lst the volume of system be V^^ at P^^ and Voat P , then P = ^1 ^ ^1 , Since thesystem is rigid there must be added a certainvolume to make up the difference between V^^and Vg* T
