Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Remains of a rider from the Phaleron cemetery at the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, 7th cent. B.C.

"Iron sword. It is intensely corroded due to the enviromental conditions of the coastal cemetery. This is one of the few swords that the excavations in the Phaleron cemetery have brought to light. It was found placed along and over the dead rider's hand, its tip reaching down to the fingers. Although vase representations and ancient writers, such as Xenophon, inform us that suitable for the cavalry were single-edged swords, the sword of the Phaleron rider is double-edged. 7th cent. B.C."
