MEETING EXPENSES OF THE CAMPAIGN 283 i860, Judge Stephen T. Logan, a warm friend and former lawpartner of Mr. Lincoln and one who had been active in his po-litical interest, came to me at my brother Jacob Bunns store,where I was then employed, and reminded me that Mr. Lincolnwould necessarily receive a large amount of correspondencewhich should be attended to promptly and which would requireclerical assistance; that prominent Republicans all over thecountry would be coming to Springfield to visit him; that theentertainment of these gentlemen would be an item of some con-sequence and that there would be various other expenses incidentto the Springfield end of the carppaign, all of which Mr. Lincoln,being a man of limited means, could ill afford to bear. JudgeLogan then suggested that a fund for that purpose should beprovided by Mr. Lincolns personal friends in Springfield, at thesame time handing me his check for five hundred dollars accom-panied by a list of nine other friends of Mr.
