For days before the Quatz Arts ball,all is excitement among the students, whodo as little work as possible and rest them-selves for the great event. The favoritewit of the different ateliers is given thetask of painting the banner of the atelier,which is carried at the head of the severalcorteges. One of these, in Bouguereausatelier, depicted their master caricaturedas a cupid. The boys once constructed an elephantwith oriental trappings—an elephant thatcould wag his ears and lift his trunk andsnort — and after the two fellows whoformed respectfully the front and hind legs77
