Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe reading desk and pulpit at Eglwys Llanfigael - geograph.org.uk - 1285731.jpg |
English: The reading desk and pulpit at Eglwys Llanfigael In the past church sermons were not 5 minute homilies. They were often two hour long marathons. Monoglot Englishmen were often appointed as vicars of rural parishes of Anglesey in the 18th and early 19thC. The squirearchy and the richest of farmers were about the only ones with a sufficient grasp of English to follow a sermon. It is little wonder that the Calvinists were able to attract the common people in droves from the Anglican church. |
