Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe railway that never carried trains^ - geograph.org.uk - 40695.jpg |
English: The railway that never carried trains! The railway line between Godalming and Portsmouth - the Portsmouth Direct line - was proposed and built by a private contractor, Thomas Brassey, as a speculative venture in 1853. Having built the line, he then tried to interest one of the established railway companies in buying it, but neither the London & South Western (LSWR) nor the London Brighton & South Coast (LBSCR) companies seemed particularly keen. So Brassey built the earthworks for a south to east connection near Shalford linking the Portsmouth line to the South Eastern Railway (SER) line from Guildford to London via Redhill. Fearing that the SER might be tempted into buying Brassey's line, the LSWR quickly agreed to lease it. The new connection was never used - it probably never even had track laid on it - but the embankment survives to this day, complete with this crumbling bridge over a footpath, and is itself used as a foot and cycle path. |
