Be-low the midship protective deck there is placed over theengines and boilers a light steel splinter deck, f in. thick,to prevent interference with the forced draft and shut itoff. Across the ends of the citadel are bulkheads of 18 in.and 16 in. armor. The sides of the ship above the upperdeck, where the auxiliary batteries are placed, are of steel, only I in. thick. On the lower deck, in front of the horizontalwater chamber—introduced to check the rolling of the shipby the movements of a large weight of water freely llowingfrom side to side—there are four deep water-tight tanks,to hold the ships cables. The two barbettes each cover a space on the upper deckabout 45 ft. by 60 ft., the plan being pear-shaped, so as toleave room for the protection of the loading gear.
