gine. THE VICTORIA STATION AT BOMBAY. (From Indian Engineering.) The accompanying illustration shows the new VictoriaTerminal Station of the Great Indian Peninsula Railwayat Bombay, which is one of the finest railroad stations inthe world. It is the largest modern architectural work yet erectedin India, and is believed to be the most extensive of itskind in existence. The execution of this work extendedover a period of 10 years, and was completed in May last.The cost of the svhole scheme amounted to about 27 lakhsof rupees ($964,000). The total length of the fa(;ade fac-ing.Hornby Row is over 1,500 ft. The author of the de-sign is Mr. F. W. Stevens, late of the Public Works De-partment, who also supervised the construction of the build-ings from the commencement to the end. The site onwhich the buildings are erected faces that on which thenew Municipal Buildings are to be built, also from thedesigns and under the supervision of Mr. Stevens. Vol. LXIII, No. 8.) The style of architecture adopted for the Terminus is afree treatment of \enetian-(iothic with an Oriental feeling,which has been proved to be the best adapted for the cli-mate of Bombay. The principal feature of the edifice is thelarge central masonry octagiinal dome, which has a fineand dignified effect, and can be seen from all parts of thecity. The dome is of solid cut stone masonry, and its con-struction is exposed to view both inside and outside. Itcrowns the grand central staircase and Ilall of the Admin-istrative ()nices. The drum of the dome is pierced byeight two-light lancet windows, glazed with painted glassof ornate design, the monogram and arms of the Companybeing freely introduced. The ape.\ of the dome is crownedby a colossal statue in stone of Progress, 16 ft. 6 in. inheight, which has a most imposing effect from below.The principal gables are crowned with groups of colossalsculpture representing Commerce, Engineering, Agricul-ture,
