nvarious stages of manufacture, and hence not strictly com-parable with each other ; still it is the most valuablemeans for comparing the total products of different years. The result is an increase of nearly $50,000,000 beyond thevalue of the product in 1887. In that year nearly everymineral industry showed an increase, and hence an in-creased total was evident. But the fact that the increasewas so very large was due to rather exceptional conditionsin a few important industries, and it could not reasonablybe expected that a similar combination of circumstanceswould result in even a larger total value for 1888. Never-theless the unprecedented stimulus given to the productionof copper by an artificial price increased the total valueof that product neariy $13,000,000, or neariy enough tooffset the decline in the total value of pig iron. The otherimportant factors in the increase were coal and the otherfuels which (oUowed the increased quantity ot metals. 312 THE RAILROAD AND (July, 1889.

The value of this series of reports on the mineral re-sources of the United States, as prepared under the direc-tion of Mr. Day, has increased from year to year with theexperience gained by the compilers, and the promptnesswith which the summary is issued this year adds to itsimportance and to the benefits which may be derived fromit by those interested. The quadruple-expansion engines which have been fittedon board the steamship Singapore, and which are shownin the illustrations herewith, are constructed on a new de-sign, which has been patented by the builders, Messrs.Fleming & Ferguson, of Paisley, Scotland.
