s of the future. The Federal Government is now pledged to carry themain channel to Cornell Basin at its own expense. When thischannel shall have been completed, Jamaica Bay will have overeight miles of main channel, 500 feet wide and 18 feet deep, andby this time the City will have opened basins, aggregatingeleven miles in length, which will pierce Brooklyn and Queensin various directions, bringing the advantages of deep waterwell into the heart of the City in seven districts. Up to this point the wharfage referred to has consisted ofplatforms upon the basins. The ultimate development ofJamaica Bay will also include piers. It will be recalled that the fill from the main channel ex-cavation is to be deposited behind a bulkhead at a distance of1,000 feet from the edge of the channel. The intervening spaceis left for the construction of piers and slips.
