Without saying aword, for he knew no one would believe him any more than hehad believed the princess, he followed the thread with hisfinger, contrived to give Lootie the slip, and was soon out of thehouse, and on the mountain-side—surprised that, if the threadwere indeed her grandmothers messenger, it should have ledthe princess, as he supposed it must, into the mountain, whereshe would be certain to meet the goblins rushing back enragedfrom their defeat. But he hurried on in the hope of overtakingher first. When he arrived however at the place where thepath turned off for the mine, he found that the thread did notturn with it, but went straight up the mountain. Could it bethat the thread was leading him home to his mothers cottage?Could the princess be there? He bounded up the mountainlike one of its own goats, and before the sun was up, thethread had brought him indeed to his mothers door. There (184)
