The jacks are arranged ingroups of 100, made up of fivehorizontal rows of 20. Eachgroup is numbered from 1 to100, or from 0 to 99, a numberon the framework of the panelsor on a special strip which canbe attached to the frameworkdenoting the particular hundred.The first group (the bottom left-hand one) is numbered 0, thenext to the right 1, the next 2, andso on to the sixth panel; thenanother row above from left to right, thus building upward.These groups are called the multiple jacks, to distinguishfrom the local jacks arranged along the length of the sectionjust below. The local, or answering, or homespring-jacks are those into which the operators plug in answer-ing the calls of the subscribers whose wires terminate on thesection.
