It is said that the Italian architects, Bernini andBorromini, were the first to introduce the rococo styleinto France, but no designer went so far in the wilder-ness of its vagaries as the French Meissonier. Hisornament furnishes a perfect example of the want ofbalance and symmetry. He designed for furniture,woodwork, silver-smithery, and modelled decoration,all of which work illustrated the broken shell-shapedpanels with frilled and scalloped edgings and curvedmouldings. Rooms were lined with looking-glasses having theserocaille mouldings, which were well adapted to showto the best advantage the glitter of the gold leaf thatwas used inordinately on the furniture and decorationof the Louis-Ouinze period.
