he decline.When Boulle used wood it was ebony, which the cabinetmakers, his successors, on the plea of its difficulty inworking, in taking the glue or varnish—Boulle neverused varnish—and other reasons, replaced with stainedpear-wood. In the choice of his woods Boulle showedthe extremest care, and one of his severest blows washis loss, by the fire that destroyed his collection ofprints, of a qauntity of rare woods which he had, welearn from the inventory he made at the time, longstored by to season. The bronze he used was honestlychiselled and chased and gilt, not lacquered, and eachornament was a design not stamped out. The secrets of Boulles skill may be said to have diedwith their inventor, for though the traditions were con-tinued, the sobriety and the grandiose style of the masterwill be found to be sadly wanting in all the work of hisimitators.
