George III, illustrated with his ownpaintings, plans and explanations of the ruins, alongwith admirable engravings by Bartolozzi. He was afterwards appointed Architect to the Kingbut subsequently resigned that post when he enteredParliament. His brother James then succeeded to thehonour he had relinquished. About 1768 the Brothersbegan the series of real estate and building operationswhich brought them great wealth as well as fame,though, as canny and provident Scots, they had neverbeen troubled by the limitation of penury and hadalways, it seems, had abundant means to pursue theirbent. Of course they executed many other importantarchitectural commissions besides those in which theyengaged as matters of personal investment. THE BROTHERS ADAM 187 pleted until the appearance of a posthumous third vol-ume in 1822. The title of this most valuable and illu-minating set is the Works in Architecture of Robertand James Adam, Esquires. Despite the title, thevolumes were not wholly devoted to architecture, forthere were sixty-four plates given to designs forsconces, bookcases, mirrors, tables, console cabinets,chairs, lamps, clocks and other articles of furniture. One great reason for the success achieved by theBrothers Adam was that they deemed no detail tootrivial or unimportant to receive their personal atten-tion and care. They felt it both their duty and privi-lege not only to design houses but to supervise theirinterior decoration, and they did not regard a commis-sion as completed until they had designed all the furni-ture, supervised its making and witnessed its placingin the positions they had planned for it.
